Financing Solutions that Fit

Ottawa, Aug 29,  2005–BTI Photonic Systems, a leading global supplier of metro edge systems for the build-out of new broadband services, today announced that its flagship product, Netstender™, has earned technical acceptance from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) division of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Technical Standards Committee "A" (Telecommunications) of the RUS has included Netstender in its “List of Materials”.  Netstender is now authorized for use in the telecommunications systems of RUS borrowers.  RUS provides technical guidance and financial assistance to utilities wanting to deliver technological advances to rural communities.

BTI has taken the complexity out of optical networking and delivered leading technology to its customers.  With Netstender, carriers can now economically scale their networks to reach new municipalities, towns and small metro areas, extending to them the wealth of new competitive broadband services already available in the metropolitan core.

Focused on initiatives in rural communities throughout the United States, RUS provides financing for construction, procurement of equipment, and enhancements to the networks of primarily Independent Operating Companies (IOCs) and Rural Local Exchange Carriers (RLECs).  With RUS acceptance, Netstender is available for these IOCs to equip their networks and offer advanced broadband and telecommunications services to rural businesses and residences.

“With Netstender, we set out to change the economics of optical networking at the edge. RUS acceptance of Netstender translates into significant savings for IOCs and RLECs, who now have all the benefits of a full carrier-grade platform and architecture at a price and lifecycle cost point previously unavailable to them,” said John Mills, vice president of product management at BTI. “The scalability, flexibility and reliability of the Netstender platform will deliver technical advantages and significant operational cost-savings in rolling out new voice, video and data services.”

BTI’s Netstender delivers the industry’s first photonic platform optimized for the metro edge. Netstender extends and expands networks for new broadband services and delivers the industry’s first 2U carrier-grade platform with optical functionality giving utilities unmatched density and economic value for the edge.
